Writing a well-structured peer review maintains the integrity of published research. Follow these four key steps to ensure a quality review.

Read the manuscript in its entirety

Your first read-through assesses your fit for the research and forms your initial impression.

Re-read and take detailed notes

Evaluate the article against specific criteria:

  • check_circle Are citations adequate?

Write a constructive review

Structure your feedback: Open with a summary, provide balanced feedback (strengths & weaknesses), and conclude with final thoughts.

"Many grammatical errors. Reject."
"Great paper. Accept."

Why? Too vague. Offers no guidance.

Strengths: Comprehensive literature review...

Why? Specific, balanced, actionable.

Make a recommendation

Recommend Accept, Reject, Revise, or Transfer based directly on your comments. Immediate acceptance is rare.
